Government gives Appalachian Trail $650k for repairs, relocation and rehab

A total of roughly $650,000 has been allocated for various projects along the Appalachian Trail as part of the National Park Service Recovery Act.  NJ, NY, VA and VT will all see projects ranging from trail relocation to repair/rehab to shelter renovations.  State-specific details below:

National Park Service Recovery Act Projects affecting the Appalachian Trail:

  • New Hampshire – $16k to Rehabilitate “The Perch” Shelter, Randolf Mountain Club, NH
  • New York – $90k to Rehabilitate Appalachian Trail in Bear Mountain, NY
  • Virginia – $25k to Relocate Two Miles of Appalachian Trail, VA
  • Vermont — $45k to Rehabilitate Historic Appalachian Trail Little Rock Pond Shelter, VT

Shenandoah enthusiasts may be happy to note the largest portion of the plan’s money ($13.3 million) will go towards rehabbing the Blue Ridge Parkway:

  • Reconstruct Historic Stone Guardwalls
  • Rehabilitate Peaks of Otter Dam
  • Remove Hazardous Trees and Encroaching Vegetation Along Parkway Corridor
  • Remove Vegetation on Bridges and Bridge Abutments to Increase Driver Safety
  • Repair Trails Parkwide
  • Replace Mt. Pisgah Wastewater Treatment System (Filter bid option)
